My Philosophy of Piano Instruction
Since my teaching aims at the unity of technique and interpretation, I start with this right away. With children I use the Faber and Faber Piano Series because their books have that aim as well.
Beginners start with using the three long fingers on the black keys. By delaying use of the thumb, good habits of integrating the shoulder, arm, wrist, and finger joints are easier to establish. Piano technique is based on the free use of all these joints and not just the fingers.
Historically keyboard technique shifted from finger-based to arm-based roughly in parallel with the mechanical and design development that resulted in today's piano.
The goal of my teaching is to enable each student to have a lifetime of music making pleasure.
